BIDs: Collaborating for a Greener Future

A Business Improvement District (BID) works to support local businesses in improving their environment through collective investment.

At Climate Clarity, we believe in the power of education and collaboration to tackle the climate crisis. That’s why we were thrilled to deliver a workshop for Hammersmith BID and Fulham Broadway BID, connected by the Hammersmith & Fulham Climate Alliance, for a Circular Economy Collage workshop in London during ReLondon’s Circular Economy Week.

A Workshop to Spark Change

Hammersmith BID brought together diverse representatives from larger companies such as The Walt Disney Company and the Holiday Inn, through to smaller local businesses including a local florist.

The workshop offered participants the opportunity to:

  • Understand the Concepts: Learn about the circular economy—how it works, its benefits, and its role in combating climate change and resource depletion.
  • Collaborate and Innovate: Work in small groups to piece together a visual ‘collage’ that illustrates the lifecycle of resources, identifying opportunities to reduce waste and design for longevity.
  • Foster Local Connections: Build stronger relationships among local businesses while aligning on sustainability goals.

The flow of the afternoon

  • Starting with a lunch provided by a local, sustainable food organisation. Members were able to relax and network.
  • The officers from the BIDs and council kicked-off the space and spoke about their aims.
  • We facilitated the immersive and gamified learning method called the Circular Economy Collage – a dynamic, team-based workshop designed to explore the principles and benefits of circularity and deepen their understanding of resources and waste. This workshop can fit into 2 hours up to 3 hours.
  • The BID took back control to signpost the next steps and highlight future opportunities and support from the BID.

Why This Matters for BIDs

Business Improvement Districts are uniquely positioned to inspire sustainable practices locally. By hosting workshops like the Circular Economy Collage, BIDs can:

  • Empower Local Businesses: Equip them with practical tools and knowledge to transition to more sustainable practices.
  • Enhance Community Cohesion: Strengthen ties between businesses, fostering collaboration on sustainability initiatives. Many of the issues being faced are shared, so collaboration can help spread best practices and avoid duplication of work.
  • Lead by Example: Start or continue to demonstrate a commitment to environmental engagement, enhancing the BID’s reputation and impact.

Ready to Host Your Own Workshop?

At Climate Clarity, we offer a range of workshops tailored to different aspects of sustainability, including:

  • Climate Fresk: The most popular workshop for digging into why climate change happens and what the consequences are. This workshop spends time focusing on the next actions to take for the group.
  • Circular Economy Collage: Explore the current issues around resource extraction, waste and pollution, then learn about the circular alternatives.
  • Biodiversity Collage: Dive into the importance of nature, what’s driving its loss, and how our businesses can change to minimise their impact.
  • Digital Collage: Explore the often forgotten environmental impact of digital technologies and learn the actions possible for a positive digital future.
  • Construction Collage: Focus on sustainable practices in the construction industry and as building users.

These workshops are highly adaptable, making them perfect for BIDs of all sizes and scopes. Whether you’re looking to engage businesses in your area, spark innovative ideas, or build collective momentum for sustainability, we can help tailor an experience to meet your goals.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Feedback from the Hammersmith and Fulham BID event was overwhelmingly positive, with participants noting the engaging format and valuable insights gained. The hosting Climate Engagement Officer of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, Hope, wrote a LinkedIn post about her experience of the joint venture.

By hosting workshops like these, BIDs can help drive meaningful change at a local level, contributing to a more sustainable future for all.
