Deep Time Walk

Deep Time Walk

Explore the Climate Emergency via a transformative walking experience that leads participants into a profound connection with the more-than-human world.

There will be prompted questions and discussions whilst walking in pairs and small groups to explore subjects that are profound and connecting.

What is Deep Time?

The discovery of deep time changed how we see the world.

Not only did it rewrite the Biblical account of time, it would provide the canvas for the theory of evolution. Later, it would help astronomers to show that the Earth itself was relatively young compared with the age of Universe.

What is this experience?

Deep Time Walk is a transformative journey through 4.6bn years of Earth history via a 4.6km guided walk. It is an invitation to view the world differently, encouraging positive action and advocacy for a regenerative Earth.

What do you learn?

Although the workshop is highly experiential, you also learn lots along the way.

Uncover the deep history of Earth

Travel through the birth of life, 5 mass extinctions, changing climates and the evolution of everything we know.

Your facilitator will stop the group along our timeline and add insights about these events for the group.

Connect with the natural world

This walk will have us explore the developments of life and the experience of Deep Time. It is a transformative and humbling experience as you move through the vast expanses of time before human history.

If we have any upcoming public workshops, they will be shown below.

Who made the workshop?

The Deep Time Walk was co-created at Schumacher College in 2007 by ecologist Dr Stephan Harding, Head of Holistic Science at the College and his MSc student, the geologist Sergio Maraschin. It builds upon the perennial idea of telling stories across time and space – something put to great use by people such as Maria Montessori, Joanna Macy and Sr. Miriam Therese MacGillis – all of which inspired and influenced the Deep Time Walk.

One way to experience the Deep Time Walk is via an app, first product from the Deep Time Walk Project which was founded in 2016.
