Energy Collage

Energy Collage

The Energy Collage is a participatory workshop open to all, providing a fun, collective-learning approach to the fundamentals of today’s energy system.

Summary of the workshop

What is our energy mix? What is renewable energy? Is there any perfect energy source? How is it produced?

Energy is the fuel of modern society. So it’s vital to approach the subject with perspective, impartiality and moderation. That’s the aim of the Energy Collage.

The workshop is played in teams where players will take part in 5 game modules, each dealing with a different aspect of current energy issues.

In each module, with the help of cards representing an element of understanding of the energy system, participants will tackle a wide range of topics.

Principles of the workshop

The design and participation of the workshop has a few principles in mind:

Rigorous facts:

Energy is first and foremost a physical subject. The content of the workshop is based on game cards created from verifiable facts, leaving little room for interpretation or opinion.

Respect for orders of magnitude:

The aim of the workshop is for participants to become aware of the orders of magnitude of energy systems, which is essential if they are to form a serious view of the issue.

Non-speculative:

The workshop does not propose any forward-looking scenarios and confines itself to taking stock of the current energy system. It is not up to the workshop to promote one scenario over another. It will be up to participants to make up their own minds.

What are the topics covered?

There are five modules within the standard workshop.

1: Energy abundance

The history of energy since 1750 via the allegory of bread, and the industrial revolution through fossil fuels.

2: Hyperpower and dependency:

Machine power (W) vs energy (production in Wh) – using the bicycle as a light and practical example!

3: Efficiency and Losses

Conversion chains, technological innovation, losses and yields – using the passenger car as a case study.

4: Density and carbon intensity

Examining the energy mix – highlighting of 9 key energy sources for the transition which make up more than 98% of the current energy mix (+ 5 optional emerging energy sources) according to 2 criteria: carbon intensity and energy density.

5: Assessing energy mixes

Breaking down the advantages, drawbacks and trade-offs of each energy source.

Summary of the workshop

We have a two-pager about the workshop. Click the button below to find out more.

Who made the workshop?

This workshop was created by La Fresque de l’Énergie, a French association brought together by the game’s seven authors.

Climate Clarity played a large hand in translating the workshop and materials to English and tweaking the most recent version for use worldwide. Next we will be developing the workshop to be increasingly UK-specific.

There are regular public workshops in French happening in Paris.
